How to visit Mount Bromo
There are two main ways you can explore Mount Bromo. Visiting Mount Bromo consists of two main activities you absolutely should do. That’s watching the sunrise, then visiting Moun Bromo Volcano Crater.
You can either use a motorcycle or walk, this way you can avoid paying for both the Jeep tour and the entrance fee. Or you can go on a Jeep Tour, but be aware that you must pay the entrance fee.
If you are walking we recommend you stay in Cemoro Lawang, that’s the city closest to Mount Bromo. It’s just a small city existing because of tourists, accommodation is also pricey. If you’re going by Jeep you can stay further away and still make it for the sunrise.
How To Visit Mount Bromo for Free
Although an entrance fee is required to access Mount Bromo the Volcano, there is a way to go for free. First of all, you will have to be in Cemoro Lawang. There is an entrance fee of 30,000 RP you pay when entering the village. This is just a small fee, the big one is for seeing the Volcano.

Exploring Mount Bromo with a Jeep Tour
Jeep tours offer an adventurous and convenient way to explore Bromo. These tours usually include a visit to the viewpoint for sunrise, the sea of sand, and the crater itself. Jeep tours can be arranged from nearby towns like Probolinggo, and Cemoro Lawang. But you can also book it online or in cities further away like Surabaya or Bali.
Where they pick you up depends on where you are, and what your budget is. Even though you can visit without the Jeep tour, there are some advantageous going with a tour. First is that you get a guide, and you will learn things you otherwise wouldn’t. After the sunrise you also get to stop to get your Instagram photos with the Jeep, Yes the Jeeps look very cool!
In the morning there are hundreds of Toyota FJ 40/45 driving up to the sunrise point. Your guide will make sure that you are picked up early enough at your hotel to make it for the sunrise.
From Cemoro Lawang you will be paying around 600,000 for the Jeep tour. In addition, you will have to pay the entrance fee per person, so make sure to bring cash! The prices for the Jeep tour are very much negotiable, so don’t just go for the first price you get. Make sure to ask how long you will have at each stop. If you’re already in Cemoro Lawang it’s easier to haggle.
Visiting Mount Bromo in bad weather
Mount Bromo is not good in the rain, you should stay one more day if the weather is really bad! It’s not so easy to know in advance how good the weather will be. If it’s cloudy and raining the sunrise will be ruined, and pretty much the seeing the crater also.
If you don’t book a Jeep tour in advance you will be able to adapt. Going in bad weather is no point, except if you already have paid. It’s better to stay for a day or two more to make sure you get decent weather. It’s worth staying for a day or two extra waiting for better weather!
Optimal Seasons for Visiting Mount Bromo
The best time to visit Mount Bromo is during the dry season from April to October. During these months, the skies are clearer, providing an unobstructed view of the majestic sunrise.
How to Plan Your Day at Mount Bromo
Start early to catch the iconic sunrise from King Kong Hill viewpoints. Post-sunrise, head to the crater where you hike across the Sea of Sand.
You will be finished after just a few hours, so you should plan the rest of the day in advance. Most people catch a bus or other transportation to Probolinggo and then continue to travel from there by bus or train. You can also stay and spend the rest of the day in Cemoro Lawang. You will probably be tired, so relax and make sure to see the sunset also!
Best Viewpoints for Mount Bromo – Sunrise tour
There are several viewpoints for seeing the sunrise, I went to King Kong Hill. The other ones were not open when I went. If you’re going with a guide they will know, if you’re going by yourself just ask around in town and you will quickly find out which viewpoint everybody is going to.
You can either stop before the viewpoint or walk a bit further when you reach the viewpoint to avoid the crowds. Its a lot of people there to see the sunrise every day, hundreds!
What to Pack for Mount Bromo
Pack warm clothing, as temperatures can drop significantly, especially during early mornings. Comfortable hiking shoes, water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen are also essential. Don’t forget your camera to capture Bromo’s spectacular vistas!
There’s a lot of sand and dust, so bring something to cover your face with too. After seeing the crater you will want to take a shower and change into new clothes! Make sure you have time for that before you continue your traveling. You will be back at your hotel before most of them have check-out time, but make sure to ask.
Usually, the Jeep driver has headlamps, but it’s good to bring. If you are going by yourself without a tour you need a lamp. You can of course use your phone, but a good headlamp is the best.
Entrance Fees to Bromo National Park (2023)
As of 2023, the entrance fee to Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park for international visitors is IDR 220,000 on weekdays and IDR 320,000 on weekends. These fees contribute to the conservation of this incredible natural site. There is also an additional fee for entrance to Cemoro Lawang at 30,000 RP.
Hiking Mount Bromo: Difficulty and Duration
The hike to the Bromo crater rim is relatively easy and takes about 1 to 2 hours, making it accessible even for novice hikers. There are lots of people in very bad shape, and I didn’t see anyone not make it. Just make sure to bring a lot of water!
The safety is really up to you when you visit the crater. It’s possible to walk where you shouldn’t, at doing so will be extremely dangerous. It is not allowed to walk around the crater, and I found a blog from someone who did it, read thelostscot experience doing it!
The Closest City to Mount Bromo
The nearest major city to Mount Bromo is Malang, which is about a 2 to 3-hour drive. Malang offers a range of accommodation options and serves as a good base to explore Bromo. But if you’re going directly from Malang to see the sunrise you will not have much sleep that night.
Most people go from Cemoro Lawang, a small town where Mount Bromo is within walking distance. The easiest way to get to Cemoro Lawang is through Probollingo.
Accommodation and Dining Near Mount Bromo
There are various accommodation options near Mount Bromo, from basic homestays in Cemoro Lawang to more upscale hotels in nearby towns. If you want a fancy hotel then Cemoro Lawang is not for you. But staying there means you can sleep a bit longer because the drive to the sunrise is shorter.
Dining options range from local warungs serving traditional Javanese food to restaurants offering more diverse cuisines. You can walk through most of the town in about 15 minutes, there are some bars too. The city makes its money from tourists, but it’s not a very touristy city!
I stayed in one of the cheapest places in Cemoro Lawng, Bromo Otix Guesthouse. It was okay, nothing very special, but far from anything luxurious. It was hot water there, which they don’t have in all places. There are no dorms in the city, making it more pricey for solo travelers.
